Nancy Drew’s latest adventure begins when she is approached by her friend Helen Corning with a frightening plea for help. Helen’s elderly great-aunts, Rosemary and Floretta Turnbull, are being terrorized in their ancestral colonial mansion, Twin Elms. The sisters are convinced the house is haunted; they report hearing strange music echoing through empty halls, thumping noises in the dead of night, and seeing masked figures in the shadows. Terrified and on the verge of selling their beloved home for a fraction of its worth just to escape the “ghost,” the sisters desperately need Nancy’s detective skills to uncover the human hand behind the haunting.

Complicating matters, Nancy is dealing with a personal crisis at home. Her father, the renowned attorney Carson Drew, has gone missing while pursuing a difficult legal case involving a railroad bridge and a ruthless, greedy landowner named Nathan Gombet. Gombet has a history of hostility, and when Mr. Drew vanishes without a trace, Nancy fears foul play. Despite the danger and her own worry, Nancy agrees to stay at Twin Elms, suspecting that the strange events at the mansion and her father’s disappearance might somehow be connected by a sinister thread.

Once inside the creaky walls of Twin Elms, Nancy’s keen intuition leads her to investigate the mansion’s architecture. She eventually stumbles upon a secret that has been lost for years: a concealed hidden staircase behind a stone wall. This secret passage holds the key to the entire mystery, linking the “ghostly” terrorizing of the aunts directly to her father’s kidnapping. In a daring conclusion, Nancy must navigate the dark, narrow passages of the hidden staircase to rescue her father and expose the criminal mastermind who has been manipulating them all from the shadows.
